European Parliament
How it works
The European Parliament has the legislative power in the Union, shared with the European Council. The Commission proposes, the Parliament adopts or rejects. They also have to approve or reject the European Union budget, if is necessary, the budget could go back to the Commission, until be approved. So, the Parliament has other important function, to control other institutions, above all, the Commission. The European Parliament had to approve all the important decisions in the union.
1. Legislative power (the commission proposes).
2. Control the Commission, and other institutions.
Organization
The European Parliament is the most democratic institution in the European Union, the members are voted by the European citizens every 5 years. The total number of members is 754, and the representation of each country is based in its population, being Germany the most populated, with 99 members, the maximum, and Cyprus, Malta, Estonia and Luxembourg, that are less populated countries, have 6 members each, so the European parliament has proportionally representation.
Members are organized in different parliamentary groups, or political lines, not by precedence or by countries, and currently are 7 political groups. The members may belong to one political group, and some of the parliamentarians do not belong to any political group.
